    This case study is a police academy of one Public Security Bureau. The police academy decoration style is modern and simple, the main color is lite yellow, and some blue peculiar to the police academy are embedded on the wall, making the room stylish and atmospheric. This article will give you an overview of SSD data recovery, and will also introduce one of the core advantages in SRS——TRIM Deleted Data Recovery.

    What is Solid State Drive (SSD)?

    Solid State Drive (SSD) has been marketed as a clear choice for consumers looking for reliability and speed. Much of the optimism surrounding the reliability of SSDs compared to the standard mechanical drives. So nowadays, SSDs are becoming more and more popular, lots of customers buy them instead of conventional hard disk drives (HDDs). SSD consists of solid-state electronic memory chips (typically DDR RAM or Flash Memory) to read and write data. It can extend the life of a notebook battery, decrease the weight of the machine, and increase read performance. SSD has solved the problem of physical constraints and is now widely used to replace HDD with high-speed circuitry.

    What makes SSD so popular?

    1. SSD provides faster access time than a hard drive does.
    2. The SSD access time does not depend on a read/write interface head synchronizing with a data sector on a rotating drive.
    3. The SSD also provides greater physical resilience to physical vibration, shock, and extreme temperature fluctuations. SSD is also immune to strong magnetic fields which could sanitize a hard drive.

    Why are SSDs corrupted/failed/not working/dead?

    SSDs do not have to contend with failure points dependent upon physical wear and tear, like a mechanical drive, but the components do degrade from use over time. As with any manufactured product, material defects can affect the longevity and reliability of an SSD. Capacitors, controller chips, and power supplies each must function reliably for the SSD to continue to operate and are common failure points. A key statistic to most SSDs is the expected number of reading/writing cycles that the flash memory is rated for. This figure calculates the endurance of the storage components and gives an expected lifespan for the drive. In most cases, consumers should expect at least a decade of average use before the read/write endurance of a drive surpassed and in some cases many more years. As with all computer components, wear and tear will eventually cause a failure. The best course of action is to have an adequate backup plan in place and follow the best practices when attempting to recover a failed drive.

    And you don’t have to worry about the mechanical components in your solid-state drive wearing down over time. That’s because there is no moving arm writing to a spinning disk, like in a traditional hard drive. That doesn’t mean your SSD will not experience any wear and tear. Capacitors degrade over time, the power supply could break, and the controller chip could kick the bucket. So, while an SSD is more reliable than a mechanical hard drive, it does have components that can and will break.

    Solid State Drive wear rates
    There are three common measurements used to describe SSD wear rates, manufacturers test the SSD hardware extensively before releasing it to consumers. The three specifications are:

    1. P/E Cycles: A program-erase cycle is a process where data is written to an SSD memory block, erased, and rewritten. The entire process counts as one cycle. The number of cycles an SSD can withstand depends on the manufacturer, hardware, and SSD technology. Total P/E cycles can range from as low as 500 up to a high of around 100,000.
    2. TBW: The Terabytes Written measurement details how much data you can write to an SSD before it fails. For example, a 250GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD carries a 150TBW rating, whereas the 1TB model comes with a 600TBW rating. Like P/E cycles, ratings vary between manufacturers and the SSD technology.
    3. MTBF: The Measurement of Time Between Failures is the third SSD reliability measurement you will see. MTBF describes the SSD reliability over its expected lifetime under normal operation and is typically measured in the tens of thousands of hours.

    SSDs are built for longevity. You should expect your SSD to last you quite a while. Better still, there aren’t many things that can outright destroy your SSD. A power surge is one thing that can damage your SSD or wipe your data, but you can protect against that with a surge protector power outlet or power strip. However, the simple fact of the matter is that as your SSD ages, electronic components wear and will eventually fail.

    Can you recover data from a corrupted/failed/not working/dead SSD?

    SSDs do not give warning signs as they near failure. There is no growing realization that the new buzz or grinding noise you hear is the slowly failing mechanical drive. When an SSD fails it simply no longer works and with no warning. When an SSD suddenly goes silent, it’s bad news. The biggest hurdle to recovering data from an SSD is the relatively newer technology that an SSD represents. Data recovery systems have had many years to perfect the recovery of files from older mechanical drives and those techniques will not work on an SSD. As the technology of SSDs matures further, expect more recovery solutions to become available.

    How to spot a failing SSD and save your data?
    The best way to stop a catastrophic loss of data from your SSD is to understand the warning signs. Your old hard drive would whirr, click, grind, and beep before it finally hit the dust. But your SSD doesn’t give those audible warning signs. There are several key warning signs that your SSD is about to die:

    1. Bad block errors: You cannot write to a specific block on the SSD, random freezes and errors, random crashes.
    2. Cannot write to disk: As it says, you can no longer write to the SSD, which in turn causes crashes, errors, and more.
    3. File system repair: You need to repair your operating file system on an increasingly regular basis.
    4. Boot crashes: Your operating system cannot boot properly, and your system fails to load.
    5. Read-only: The SSD suddenly switches into read-only mode, stopping you from writing new data to the drive.

    These are not the only indicators before an SSD failure, but they are the most common. A healthy backup system should form part of any computer user’s routine. You never know when something might happen, and you’ll kick yourself if you lose important data.

    Whats TRIM?

    SSD TRIM is an Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) command that enables an operating system to inform a NAND flash solid-state drive (SSD) which data blocks it can erase because they are no longer in use. The use of TRIM can improve the performance of writing data to SSDs and contribute to longer SSD life. Basically, with TRIM feature the user’s solid-state drive (SSD) can improve computer performance. However, this function will make data recovery impossible. When a user deletes any data from a TRIM-enabled SSD, then the drive will clear all the sectors immediately and permanently.

    How does SSD TRIM impact data recovery?

    The potential for data recovery on an SSD is hampered due to the way an SSD self-manages data destruction using the TRIM command. Furthermore, the chance of data recovery depends on the SSD status. Is the drive completely broken, or did you lose data in a power surge? To understand how TRIM impacts data recovery, it is useful to understand what happens when you delete a file on your computer.

    Data deletion on a hard drive
    A traditional hard drive stores files in physical locations on a magnetic platter. The operating system indexes the file locations in a file system and accesses the data using a mechanical arm. Whereas, a solid-state drive is a form of flash memory, like a USB thumb drive—but with a much larger capacity.

    When you press Delete, the file doesn’t actually annihilate into the ether. First, it moves to the Recycle Bin, where its indexed location remains in place in case you want to rest. When you delete the file from the Recycle Bin (or use the Shift + Delete shortcut for direct delete), Windows removes the file completely and informs the operating system that the space is available for new data. While that seems a little convoluted, it means your data remains recoverable, at least for a short period.

    Data deletion on an SSD
    Your SSD is different from a regular hard drive due to the data storage technology. Your SSD stores data in cells. Before writing new data to a cell, the SSD must move the existing data to another location on the SSD. During regular operations, SSDs essentially rapidly zero the data containing cells before rewriting data. SSDs maintain control over where data is written within the cells. This means that the operating system might request data to be written to block 1,000, whereas the SSD pointer table contains an altogether different number. This is known as wear-leveling.

    Data still writes to the SSD. The SSD manages the location of the data, ensuring there is space for the new data to write to the drive. However, the operating system might mark a block as empty according to its records, while the SSD is moving data around to ensure even wear. That’s where the TRIM command comes in. TRIM allows the operating system to tell the SSD which blocks it can pre-zero. The process keeps the data write process fast as you don’t have to wait for the block to zero. The flip side of that usefulness is that you don’t know when the TRIM command will inform on which blocks to zero.

    How to recover deleted data from SSD TRIM?

    SRS SSD Forensic Recovery System supports one-click recovery of TRIM deleted data. The deleted data of SSD after TRIM will be cleared, and the tools at the logical level can no longer recover the deleted data. Therefore, the recovery of TRIM deleted data has always been the pain point and difficulty of the industry.

    Police Academy

    This case study is a police academy of the Indonesian National Police. The police academy decoration style is modern and simple, the main color is lite gray. As shown in the pictures, the flat academy environment is equipped with intelligent equipment which makes you more motivated to study and work.

    In response to the actual needs of the teaching center of the Police Academy, we recommended the Intelligent Video Wall Platform. The Intelligent Video Wall Platform is 6224mm*1065mm*2800mm. According to the actual site needs, it can only be customized. The size of the final delivered platform is 4200mm*800mm*2200mm.

    The Intelligent Video Wall Platform is made of all-metal material, with multiple high-definition LED screens, and external decorative LED lights, which help alleviate visual fatigue and improve the visual effect of the entire environment.

  • [Case Study] Mobile Forensics: Forensic Data Extraction from Android Devices Using ADB Part III

    Editor’s Note: Digital forensic investigation on mobile devices requires investigators to follow step by step workflow to extract and analyze digital evidence. In this article, forensic experts from SalvationDATA will continue to have a technical walkthrough on Android forensic data extraction using ADB to collect crucial device artifacts for digital forensic analysis and investigation.

    Device Acquisition Procedure

    Device Acquisition

    The forensic acquisition is the steps of making a bit by bit replica of the custodian device while maintaining the integrity of the data stored in the device. Android devices however come with a two-level of access which an investigator has to determine in preliminary acquisition steps.

    Understanding Level of Access:

    Android devices offer two-level of access that are root or non-root access. Devices come pre-built with non-rooted access, Which allows investigators to perform logical acquisition instead of physical acquisition. In simple terms, whatever information is stored and available logically can be acquired.

    Root accessed devices however offer a complete level of device access, which can also be determined as administrator access. Here devices can be acquired locally and physically. The logical partitions, system partitions, ram, and ROM are available for acquisition.

    How to determine a device is rooted or non-rooted?

    Using forensic utilities:

    • Forensic utilities mostly available in the market are available for commercial purpose usage only. However, utilities such as Cellebrite, Oxygen, SPF Pro, etc. Software utilities provide stepwise methods to acquire an Android device.
    • Forensic utilities can determine if a device is rooted or non-rooted hence moves forward with the method of acquisition as per the availability of the data.

    Manual methods:

    Device Prerequisites:

    • The device should be unlocked
    • USB Debugging Should be enabled

    Machine Prerequisites :

    • Minimal ADB Installation
    • Steps to Check Root Access
    1. Close all the active connections by putting the device on flight mode
    2. Unlock the device and connect it to the workstation via USB cable
    3. Open CMD/Powershell(Windows) or Terminal (Linux/Debian/Mac OS) and execute the following commands

    ADB devices

    • A unique identifier with a device name should be visible.
    • A popup will be displayed on the device consisting of RSA fingerprint key and confirmation to add the machine as a trusted device

    ADB shell

    • Shell access should be granted to the device
    • A basic list of Linux commands such as ls, dd, cat, etc is usable in the shell

    Su Command

    • Checks if the device has superuser/root permissions.
    • If permission is denied or command not found is displayed, the device should be non-rooted.
    • Try accessing the system files & folders

    a. Execute CD /data

    b. Ls to view the files and folders present in the current directory

    c. If LS returns no data, then the system files and folders are hidden. Which cannot be modified as it requires root permission. Hence, the device is non-rooted.

    Device Imaging

    Device imaging can be performed once we have identified the device is rooted or non-rooted.

    Rooted Device Acquisition

    Devices with root access can be acquired using manual methods or using a forensic tool such as SPF Pro.

    Manual Acquisition Method:

    Once you enter as a root user, check for the mounted partitions-

    • Cat /proc/partition
    • Displays the available partitions with size in kilobytes. The files are stored in /dev/block/partition name
    • Available partitions Android Partitions

    Exploring the available partitions:

    • Mmcblk0 : We can see that the partition has 15388672 KB size which is around 14.67 GB
    • Mmcblk0p1 : Block Size — 20480 KB which is around 20 MB
    • Mmcblk0p2 : Block Size — 1280 KB which is around 20 MB
    • Mmcblk0p3 : Block Size — 1280 KB which is around 20 MB
    • Mmcblk0p4 : Block Size — 8192 KB which is around 8 MB
    • Mmcblk0p5 : Block Size — 8192 KB which is around 8 MB
    • Mmcblk0p6 : Block Size — 8192 KB which is around 8 MB
    • Mmcblk0p7 : Block Size — 204800 KB which i6s around 200MB
    • Mmcblk0p8 : Block Size — 16384 KB which is around 16 MB
    • Mmcblk0p9 : Block Size — 8192 KB which is around 8 MB
    • Mmcblk0p10 : Block Size — 2097152 KB which is around 2 GB
    • Mmcblk0p11 : Block Size — 11616256 KB which is around 11.07 GB
    • Mmcblk0p12 : Block Size — 524288 KB which is around 512 MB

    Using DD command we can acquire a memory block/partitions.

    • Advanced DD commands such as DCFLDD or DC3DD aren’t available for most of the devices. It can be executed if the device owner has pre-installed DCFLDD or DC3DD binaries.

    Execute the following DD commands:

    • Dd if= source” of=”destination directory/destination file.dd”
    • DD command can create a disk image on the device via manual method. You can insert a blank SD card to output the image file to the external SD card location.
    • Sample command :

    DD if=”/dev/block/mmcblk0” of=”/extSdCard/image/mmcblk0.dd”

    Transfer the acquired memory blocks to investigation machine using ADB pull or direct file transfer using MTP:

    You can transfer the image files by copying the files from the SDCARD using a memory card reader. Always ensure while transferring files from one source to a destination, a write blocker should be always active so that we can refrain from the modification of evidence. Software-based write blockers can be utilized or the memory card should be mounted in read-only mode.

    Non-Rooted Device Acquisition

    Devices with non-root access can be acquired using logical acquisition techniques. Non-Rooted Device can be temporarily rooted and acquired but the process tampers with the user data hence is not recommended. With limited access to the user device, non-rooted device acquisition techniques extract minimal data from an Android Device. The following steps enumerate the procedure to acquire a non-rooted device:

    1. Discovering the device via ADB

    2. Executing ADB backup

    3. Now accept the Full Desktop backup by entering a secure password

    4. A backup file (backup.ab) gets created after the backup is successfully created

    a. Executing Local Backups

    • A local backup can be created in the device itself, it is much faster than ADB backup. However, an external SD Card is recommended to utilize for local backup storage.
    • The following steps show how to create local backups.

    b. Navigate to Device>Settings> Backup and Restore

    c. Check for the available backup locations such as System setting and Application Data

    d. Validate the selected items and start the backup process

    Observations

    1. Local backups are created and stored in .bak file format
    2. Descript.xml file contains the backup file information.
    3. The local backup contains application and user data backup

    Image Integrity

    Device acquisition depends on the investigator to thoroughly maintain the integrity of the image. Image integrity can be maintained using hashing methods.

    Hashing can be performed using software utilities or mobile forensic software such as SPF Pro creates hashes from the initial acquisition steps.

    Image hashing depends on the algorithm investigator defines to check data for integrity. The hashing algorithms such as MD5, SHA1, SHA256 are utilized to create a unique hash value. The hash value can be revalidated at any point in the investigation to denote that the image data stays intact.

    Manual Hashing Methods:

    While performing acquisition using the DD command, we can also hash the output image to file. Rooted Android device supports only the MD5 algorithm hashing by default.

    Syntax:[dd if=/dev/block/memory-block /of=/sdcard/output-image.dd | md5sum > hash.txt]

    Creates a DD image of the memory block and creates a text file with the computed image hash.

    Hashing Using Software Utilities:

    Forensic Software utilities provide the functionality to create hashes based on algorithms such as md5, sha1, sha256, etc.

    Once we have generated a backup file of the Android device, the backup file is in .ab format and can be imported into a preferred analysis tool to parse the data and present it in a readable format, such as SalvationDATA’s mobile forensic system SPF Pro (SmartPhone Forensic System Professional).

    SPF Pro supports to load and directly analyze an ab format ADB backup file, extract and present the acquired data in a way that is easy to read for forensic inspections.

    Conclusion

    Above is the forensic extraction procedure when we accomplished the complete extraction of digital evidence from Android devices using ADB commands. Android Forensic Investigation requires an investigator to be proficient regarding the extraction and analysis of evidence. The methods involved and the amount of data collected while performing device acquisition can become a crucial pointer determining the extraction of artifacts leading towards discovering evidence.

    Android is a rapidly evolving operating system, hence the methods and acquisition methods will keep changing based on device & data access it is providing. Google timely releases patches for security enhancement and authorized device access. The extraction methods are also affected by the custom ROMs being developed by individual device manufacturers which causes an investigator to customize extraction methods every time.     When we built a forensic lab, control room, or command center, we all know that the decoration in accordance with ISO 11064 guidelines creates a comprehensive list of measurable criteria.

    The system of value goes from dark to light, and from floor to ceiling. Floor decoration should have a light reflectance value (LRV) of between 0.2 and 0.3; wall decoration should have 0.5 to 0.6, and ceilings should have 0.8 and a matte finish. In addition to the ISO requirements, the design must adhere to local building codes for flammability and slip resistance, as well as clients’ requirements. Above all, decoration must be functional, durable, and maintainable because many control rooms must last 30 years or more.

    But the reality usually is that if follow all the guidelines, the decoration cost will be very high, and we need to switch the rooms or buildings a few years after, the whole cost of decoration will be added again if we will build a new one, and the cost even higher than before.
