So how can we tell which series it belongs to when we have an IBM/Hitachi drive, so that we can know whether it is included in the support list? We will need to talk about the model numbering rule for Hitachi hard drives:

The first numbering method is only applied to the early generations of IBM HDD, which should look like the following picture shows:

The model number format is like XXXX-XXXXX. We can tell the model series of this kind of HDD by checking the first 4 letters (“DADA” in the picture), and you can find “DADA” in our support list, which means this HDD is supported by our program.

The second numbering way is IC“XX+X+XXX+XX+XX+XX-X”, which should look like the following picture shows:

We can tell the model series of this kind of HDD by checking 4 letters (“ATCS” in the picture), and you can find “ATCS” in our support list, which means this HDD is supported by our program.

Since the first Deskstar hard drive(540M/4500RMP) from IBM was released, this series of hard drives has been through more than ten generations. Till Hitachi took over Deskstar 7k250, which should be the fourteenth generation, this series began to employ a new way of numbering. Let's take an example to explain it.

HDS “XX+XX+XX+X+X+XX+X+X” or HTS “XX+XX+XX+X+X+XX+X+X”, which should look like the following pictures show:

"HDS" indicates the drive is a desktop hard drive (Deskstar series), and “HTS” indicates the drive is a laptop hard drive (Travelstar series). We can tell the model series of “HDS” HDD by checking 4 letters (“PLA3” in the picture); for “HTS” HDD, we need to check the 4 digits right after “HTS” ("4240" in the picture). You can find both “PLA3” and “4240” are included in our support list, which means these two HDD are supported by our program.
